New varieties of citrus and apples will appear in Chile in 4 years

By 2022, Chile will complete a program to test new varieties of citrus and apples. The absence of seeds will be a hallmark of new varieties of citrus.

"About 35% of fruits are sold today at a reduced price precisely because of the presence of seeds in them. To solve this problem, new varieties of these plants have been developed, "said Johanna Martis, associate professor of the Department of Agronomy and Forestry at the Catholic University of Chile.

Bad fruit will solve the problem of producers of mandarins and lemons. Within four years, experts will complete testing of new varieties and begin commercial distribution. Lemon (Limonero Fino 49) was obtained by crossing Eureka Frost and Fino 49, and mandarins have common genes with the already existing varieties of W. Murcott and Fortune.

"The breeding activities are at the final stage of testing before preparing for sale. All agronomic characteristics, yield and conformity of varieties to industrial standards are evaluated, "added Johanna Martis.

In new varieties of apples, breeders will increase resistance to fungal diseases of Venturi. According to the researcher of Catholic University Pablo Grau, the ability to preserve a presentable appearance for a long time will be an advantage of the new variety.
